Mount Ság

Kemensalja is hailed as one of the nicest regions of Western Transdanubia.Mount Ság, rising near the town of Celldömölk is the westernmost member of the row of butts located to the north of Lake Balaton. Legend has it that it had been built by Lucifer with the help of his seven devils residing in Alsóság so that he could have a high place to admire the landscape from.

Five million years old and rising to 279 metres the tall volcanic hill has been under national protection since 1975. The majority of its basalt top has been quarried and gaping crater left behind is a real natural sight to behold. Visitors can walk the 12 station of the volcano trail in this magnificent natural environment, which offers a colourful introduction into volcanic activity. The formation and evolution of the butte is demonstrated by the stations along the geological trail. Hikers’ attention is also called at the rich flora and fauna also described on the boards along the recently renewed educational trail. The Őrség National Park Directorate has put 19new boards along the trail running around the parking lot atop Mount Ság. 13 of them illustrate the wildlife of the area while 6 help visitors familiarise themselves with unique local plants. Walking on the pathways of the hill we can see long-eared owls, little owls, peacock butterflies, and various types of feather grass and wintergreen.

Viniculture has been around since time immemorial. Mount Ság is part of the Historical Wine Region producing a unique wine with distinctive flavour and a rich mineral content. As for varietal mix, Riesling is the most typical brand here. A healing drink known as “Sagweiner” was sold in the 1800s all over Europe in pharmacies. It was famous for its positive nutritional qualities, they used it for cleansing the kidney, boosting the appetite and curing gastritis

The memorial cross atop the hill commemorating the disastrous Trianon peace treaty concluded after WWI, which is brightly illuminated and can be seen from afar even during the night.

Positive energies surging from the breakpoint of the Earth make a beneficial impact on us. Humans have been able to feel these energies at various points and places since the very early times and have held these spots in due respect. Similarly to the Attila Hill in Tápiószentmárton, Mount Ság is also claimed to be generating such positive energies. All you need to do is spend a few hours at the energy zones, take a leisurely walk in the crater, or do some hiking on the ridges, and you will feel the beneficial effects after a while

Sághegy Museum

The museum operates in the renovated building that used to house an electric transformer. The interactive museum introduces the natural and cultural heritage of the area, some of the archaeological finds unearthed in the region and the history of mining and viticulture.

There is a small study path running around the museum building and also a thematic playground area focusing on volcanic activity.l.
