The Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic pilgrimage church
The church of mercy of the Holy Virgin was built between 1746 and 1748 by means of donations and promise presents based on the model of the basilica in Mariazell. It was built between 1746 and 1748 from devotional gifts and copied the design of the basilica of Mariazell. The turreted Erdődy Chapel was placed in the centre of the spacious church with the devotional altar erected at the request of Theresa Eszterházy and with the devotional statuette of the virgin Mary dressed in expensive clothes. Its Baroque murals were painted by Stephan Dorffmeister in 1774. The portrait of St Anne on the altarpiece, also believed to have been made by Dorffmeister, the saint is depicted together with the Virgin Mary.
There is a little niche in the wall where a special stone was put, which injured a well-digger, who luckily recovered, and this is where the marble plaque of Odó Koptik can be found as well. The painting in the chancel shows the wedding ceremony of King St Stephen and Queen Giselle (who was later beatified). The furnishing was made in the Rococo style. The visitor is impressed by the beauty and diversity of the 14 altars, the pulpit, the baptismal font, the crosses and the silver candlesticks. The current organ of the church was built in 1914; its builder (Mauracher, Salzburg) prepared the instrument for the Pannonhalma Basilica in 1876.
Leaving the little room adjacent to the sacristy and ascending the wooden staircase we arrive at the Treasury (Tárház) where a permanent exhibition has been arranged to introduce the history of the numerous devotional objects and other treasures found the in the church over the centuries: frescoes, dome paintings, gifts of gratitude, neatly decorated cupboards. Here visitors can also see the devotional Virgin Mary pictures painted on wooden shields and carried during the procession in 1748, when the church was consecrated.
The treasury can be visited upon advance booking. Tel.: +36 95 420 135
