The oldest church in Celldömölk goes back to the 12th century in the Romanesque style and is believed to have been established by King Béla IV. It is more likely that it was erected by missionary monks who came from the direction of Győr by boats, and they set up the building on the foundations of a Roman villa. It is the only ruin church in Hungary made of tuff.
In the 13th century it was reconstructed Gothic design and in the 14th century the chancel received a new vaulting, above which they added dwellings for the friars living here. We also have remains of a few frescoes from the 1300s. One fresco depicted St Bartholomew carrying his own skin while the other showed the Annunciation. To the south of the church there was once a monastery that had been destroyed and vanished without a trace.
The small stronghold that experienced such hard times had been standing until the Ottoman occupation, but then its dwellers fled. Its mediaeval devotional statue was taken to the Csallóköz region, to a church now standing on the area of Slovakia. The abandoned building was used as a granary from 1803 onwards, and was registered as a listed building in the 1930s. In WWII the northern and southern walls and also its tower suffered a bomb attack. In 1946 the walls, then in 1948 the tower was renovated.
The also destroyed roof has recently been replaced by a new one, which saved the tower from decay.
