St Michael church dating back to the age of the Árpáds
The small but very picturesque Roman Catholic church, named after St Michael archangel, is standing atop a small hill in the former Felsőmesteri area. The church was built on a grave mound dating back to the Iron Age. It was rebuilt in Romanesque style in the second half of the 1200s.
It was unused during the Reformation period as witnessed by the inscriptions that have been preserved on the northern side of the sanctuary. The stone pulpit dates from the 17th century, next to it is a Black Madonna icon hailed as the most unique feature of the church. Its main altar and carved statuette of Mary are neat examples of folk baroque.
In the 18th century the Békássy family had a crypt and a sacristy built and the church building vaulted. The wooden belfry now standing on the southern side of the church was put here in around 1855. The building was refurbished in 1999, the contours of the former doors and windows were indicated on the walls and the walls were also strengthened.
