Story of the house
The story of the patent-holder market town Celldömölk Little Mariazell was written by István Porkoláb and was published in 1927 in Celldömölk. The book describes the story of the town in detail. In the chapter “The houses and their owners at the time“, we can read the following: “On the western side there is the Joachim-house, one of the most valuable buildings of our little town. The architectural style – ceiling with stuccos and arcs – refers to the architect of the monastery. Even the times coincide with each other: the latter was built in 1776 by János György Joachim who had already owned a house here before. It was then inherited by his son Joseph, who transferred it to Mihály Molnár around 1840. Subsequently the building came into the possession of the Zsigmond family who still own it (1927). The first grocery of Kiscell was opened by János György Joachim in this building around 1760. At this time Joachim, József Heywaldt’s descendant obtained together with András Bánovits an exclusive patent from the principality which allowed them to sell whatever they wanted in their house and shop. It meant plenty of different goods and products. Some of them are concretely mentioned in the contract signed by the monastery. Examples are: iron, gunpowder, shotgun, spices, frieze, linen, cardboard, silk ribbon, white and red ribbon, goods from Styria and Nuremberg, wood and flax, oil, fish, herring, candles, soaps, religious and secular products, incense, smell candles, rosary, pictures, mirrors, twine etc. – what is more, everything sold at factory-gate prices. The shop was prospering and made Joachim a rich man. He paid 53 forints to the monastery on his house, garden and fields of 880 French feet every year. Mihály Molnár paid 12 forints 30 Kreutzer only on his house and garden in 1847. Today there is no garden belonging to the house, it has been built in.
